Police arraign lady who accused UK-based Nigerian doctor of rape

The Lagos state police command has arraigned Bola Aseyan, a Nigerian doctor, over allegations of rape against Funmilayo Ogunsanya, a Twitter influencer, who happens to be her colleague in the United Kingdom.

In June, Aseyan had in a flurry of tweetsaccused Ogunsanya of abusing her both sexually and emotionally over the course of their one-year relationship.

Ogunsanya had, however, dismissed her claims, explaining that they only had sex under the influence of alcohol at the time when they were cohabiting.

He had also threatened legal actionagainst Aseyan and demanded £10,000 (about N4.8 million) for the damages her allegations had caused him.

On Wednesday, the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID) unit of the command arraigned the lady before the Yaba magistrate court on five counts bordering on false accusation and extortion.

It was gathered that the court ordered that Aseyan be remanded in the custody of the SCIID pending the perfection of her bail conditions while the case was adjourned till October 14 for hearing.

But the development was greeted by controversies after Aseyan dismissed reports that she was arraigned in a poston her Twitter page.

This was after Segun Awosanya, the convener of the #EndSARS movement, had shared a screenshot of the charge sheet on social media to confirm that she was remanded in police custody pending the perfection of her bail conditions.

“She has been remanded in the custody of Panti until bail conditions are met. She will undergo COVID-19 test before being taken to prison if she fails to meet her bail conditions,” he wrote in a series of tweets.

Speaking with TheCable Lifestyle on Friday, Muyiwa Adejobi, the state’s police spokesman, confirmed that she was arraigned but later released after meeting her bail conditions.

He added that investigation into the matter is ongoing.

“Yes, she was arraigned but has been granted bail. She met the bail conditions and she is on her own for now while the case is still on,” he told TheCable Lifestyle.

The police spokesman also wondered why the medical practitioner would deny her arraignment.

“I heard a rumour that she denied that she was never arraigned. That’s not true. I don’t know what she understands by arraignment anyway. But we charged her to court, she faced a judge and she made plea, that’s arraignment. I don’t know what she means by arraignment again,” he added.
