COVID-19: All corps members will undergo antigen-based test, says NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) says all members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at orientation camps across the country will undergo one of the new antigen-based tests.

Chikwe Ihekweazu, director-general of the NCDC, spoke on Tuesday at the presidential task force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing in Abuja.

He said that the process of procurement of the antigen-based test is almost completed, adding that the move is part of efforts to ensure the safe re-opening of NYSC camps in the country.

“We will test everyone to enable us to keep our camps safe with the understanding of what is going on in the country,” he said.

Ihekweazu also said that the government had launched an infection prevention and control (IPC) call vanguard in all the states.

According to him, persons interested in the IPC will be trained for self-management and regulation in the camps as soon as they reopen.

He explained that the risk assessment of all the camps has been ongoing in the last few weeks while assuring parents of the safety of their children.

The DG also advised parents to encourage their children to do the needful before resuming in the camps.

He said that though the youths are at lower risk, yet “lower risk does not mean no risk.”

Nigeria has continued to record daily cases of COVID-19 with 63,036 confirmed cases reported as of Monday.

A total number of 1,147 deaths has been recorded so far.
