Insecurity: We remain committed to community policing— say NGF

Amid widespread insecurity, the Northern Governors Forum has said all governors in the region remain committed to community policing and other measures that can curb criminality.

The forum said this in a congratulatory message to the acting Inspector-General of Police, Usman Baba, on his recent appointment by the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd).

The NGF urged Baba to pay attention to proactive measures in tackling crime in the country.

The Chairman of the NGF and Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, said in a statement on Saturday that Baba’s appointment was well-deserved “considering his track record of diligent service to the nation across various police formations in the country.”

While wishing him a successful tenure, Lalong said the NGF was particularly concerned that the farming season was at hand but many farmers might be discouraged from cultivating their farms if crimes such as banditry, kidnapping and insurgency were not curtailed.

Lalong said the governors would accord Baba all the necessary support to enable him to provide the leadership needed for proactive policing.

He said, “As Northern Governors, we remain committed to community policing and any other measure that will lead to securing our region which has been bedevilled by different forms of insecurity.

“We must work together to adopt new measures that will not only enable us to overcome these challenges but also remain on top of the situation by preventing criminals from carrying out their nefarious activities.”
